On the site of a 19th-century sugar plantation, Nail Bay is one of Virgin Gorda’s most intriguing stops. Nestled on a lush tropical hillside overlooking three of the island’s most stunning beaches, Nail Bay is both a villa community and a resort, with suites, rooms and apartments for rent. The villas are privately owned and were built to suit the individual owners’ architectural preferences. Some are quite luxurious, while others have West Indian charm. The furnishings also reflect the individual owner’s taste, but all have fully equipped gourmet kitchens, washer/dryers, dishwashers and microwaves. Some have private pools and are air-conditioned. Villas range in size from one bedroom to five bedrooms. Some face the beach, while others are scattered on the hillside. Nail Bay’s resort complex, Island Time Village, is set on a hillside overlooking the swimming pool and tennis court. The pastel-painted bi-level buildings house deluxe rooms, suites and apartments. The rooms have kitchenettes and a bathroom big enough to hold a Jacuzzi for two. They offer views of the sea from their private terrace. The suites have a separate bedroom as well as a living room and full kitchen. Two wall beds in the living room are great for children, but families might prefer the apartments, which have from one to three bedrooms. They are quite luxurious, with central air conditioning, indoor and outdoor dining areas, large decks and Jacuzzis. The spacious grounds are beautifully maintained and planted. The ruins of the sugar plantation have been restored and weddings and parties are often held there. There are two freshwater pools, a cooling waterfall, outdoor whirlpool, one tennis court that can be lit, a bocce court and croquet field. Three beach strips are part of the resort and the snorkeling is first-rate, with a coral reef and caves to explore. The Dog and Dolphin Bar and Grill at poolside is a casual dining spot, but if you prefer to eat in, you can hire a talented local chef to prepare and serve your dinner. Nail Bay is a 20-minute drive from Spanish Town. A car is a must.
